在這張照片上可以看到X-35B噴管的外部驅動馬達和盤繞著的管線，結構和1972年的設計幾乎完全相同。不過X-35B/F-35B使用以燃油為工質的液壓系統來驅動噴管，這也就是所謂的燃油液壓技術。發動機自備液壓泵增壓燃油驅動液壓馬達，然後這些燃油還是會進入發動機消耗掉
