A dining room chandelier should be no wider than 12 inches less the width of the table and should sit 30" above the top of the table for a standard 8' ceiling. Raise the fixture 3" for each additional foot of ceiling height.

For general kitchen lighting ceiling mounts, semi-flushes, cans, or even recessed fluorescent fixtures are acceptable. Mini-pendants or island lights may be used for increased task lighting and should be hung about 30" above the counter depending on ceiling height. Mini-pendants should be spaced 12"-18" apart. For lighting a smaller eating area like a dinette, the fixture should be hung 30' - 36' inches off the table top and should be at least 12" less the width of the table.
