Study on Shishkin by Michael Handt- Oil on canvas - 60cm x 80cm - This is mainly a copy of Ivan Shishkin's painting "Thickets" from 1881. I chose a slightly browner and more yellowed colour tone and tried to make the hill less steep.  I have been looking at a lot of master's paintings lately and as a result of that I wasn't too happy with my technique. Therefore I figured that copying some of my favourites could help to improve my brushwork. Silbury Hill in Avebury, Wiltshire is the largest man-made mound in Europe, it compares in height and volume to the roughly contemporary Egyptian pyramids. Probably completed in around 2400 BC, it apparently contains no burial. Though mysteriously important in itself, its purpose and significance remain unknown. There is no access to the hill itself. It is part of the Avebury World Heritage Site. Stonehenge is 16 miles away.
