Common ruderal weed native to temperate areas of the Northern Hemisphere of the Old World. Young leaves and unopened buds are eaten raw in salads, while older leaves are cooked. The leaves are high in vitamin A, vitamin C and iron, carrying more iron and calcium than spinach. It has diuretic properties; in Belgium season ale called Pissenlit ("wet the bed" in French) is brewed from it.
