Sprang Sweater - crafted by Carol James (click pictures for larger image) The above sweater is not knitted, it is not crocheted, it is not woven. It is created with an ancient process called "Sprang", a form of oblique interlacing or plaiting. Here is the message Carol posted on yahoogroups "Sprang_List" along with these pictures. Carol writes: Inspired by images of Egyptian work on the site Den Blauwen Swaen, I decided to try my hand at a sprang sweater. I selected a fiber that seemed…

Bent Cane Språng Tapestry Project by Ellen Shipley: "heres the middle portion starting to be spread out. I'm thinking the best way to work the tapestry is to take it off the språng loom and tack it onto a foam core board." <> See web site for continuation of project. Sprang Weaving, Pin Weaving, Finger Weaving, Wood Spoon Carving, Backstrap Loom, Tablet Weaving, Textiles Techniques, Weaving Textiles, Weaving Projects

Finally warped up the bent cane sprang loom I made mumble mumble years ago. I left it off, but I can see why it needs the bar across the bottom (separate from the working bars) to stabilize the loom. I'm forever pushing the bar down to tighten the warp. Stabilizing the loom might minimize that (or it might not -- I also need notches in the bars or the loom). It's incredibly light weight. I'm used to more heft with a stretcher bar loom, and I guess I've been using gravity to hold my shed…

Sprang Weaving Tutorial, Sprang Weaving, Homemade Loom, Diy Loom, Textile Weaving, Finger Weaving, Weaving Loom Diy, Inkle Weaving, Native Beading Patterns

My first love is paper crafts, but over the years I have learned to do some fabric art techniques such as Card Weaving, Inkle Weaving, Stick Weaving and Sprang of which I really enjoy. Today I'll be sharing a satchel I made using the Sprang technique. I had never heard of Sprang Weaving before the day I learned to do it. Some of my girlfriends and I just decided to take a class at a medieval event for the heck of it and it was a lot of fun. When the class ended I couldn't wait to make…

Loom Notes: Lots of sprang and weaving! Sprang Weaving Tutorial, Sprang Weaving, Weave Structures, Filming Videos, Floor Loom, Hemp Yarn, Rigid Heddle Weaving, Soap Bag, Weaving Tutorial

In the last week I've been working on filming videos on how to add sprang lace to weaving projects. This project is dragging on somewhat because every time I sit down to my loom to work on another section of sprang, I come up with more ideas on how to incorporate sprang into weaving!I promise the videos are forthcoming, I just need to do a bit of editing on them. In the meantime, here are some photos to get you excited!I also worked on a warp I had set up months ago, probably not long after…

Weaving Tutorial, First Blog Post, Weaving Projects, Iron Age, How To Work, That Way, Fiber Art, To Work, Pie Chart

I'm finally catching up on blog posts to go along with my weekly sprang videos. Although I will not be doing a single blog post for each video, rather I will do one blog post for each technique, even if I published multiple videos on that technique. That way I can catch up on blog posts more quickly. So, full twist interlinking. I find that full twist interlinking creates a beautifully open and drapey sprang cloth. It can be helpful to use full twist interlinking when you want a finished…

Felt Making, Weaving Loom Diy, Rigid Heddle Weaving, Heddle Loom, Company Gifts, Handwoven Fabric, My Class, Weave Pattern, Weaving Patterns

I had a wonderful time teaching at CNCH! Here are a few photos from my class on layering sprang on handwoven fabric. First, the classroom, which was located about as close to the beach as they get. Some views of the students work. They all were experimenting and seemed to have a great time doing it. Everyone got beyond the basic 1/1 interlinking, and they were trying out some fun things I wouldn't have thought of. Innovative, creative work! Including one who decided to work sprang on the…

Weaving Color Combinations, Sprang Weaving, Rigid Heddle Weaving, Card Weaving, Woven Art, Double Weave, Tablet Weaving, Weaving Designs, Fibres Textiles

In an effort to be more brave about color, I'm trying some oddball (to me) color combinations in some small sprang-and-woven art pieces, just to see what happens with color blending and contrast. These are a series similar in structure to some of the doubleweave I had done a couple years ago. It's interesting that the sprang under the tension of the loom is causing the fabric to buckle slightly. I don't remember noticing this before, but the low light angle is really showing it up in this…
