Dizzy Dean actually helped lay a foundation for the Civil Rights movement which transformed American society in the 1950s and 1960s.

A trailblazing player in the Negro Leagues, baseball pitcher Satchel Paige also became the oldest rookie in Major League history and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971.

On Jan. 20, 1947, baseball lost a legend. Josh Gibson, the most prodigious power hitter in Negro Leagues history -- and perhaps baseball history -- died of a stroke at the age of 35.

Satchel Paige became the oldest player in big league history when he pitched three innings for the Kansas City A's on Sept. 25, 1965.
