Researchers have discovered a new parasite in freshwater mussels after investigating hundreds of mussels that died along the Embarrass River in Shawano County six years ago.

Swan Mussels (Anodonta cygnaea) are the largest freshwater mussel found in the UK. They are filter feeders and help to keep water free of microscopic algae. They are available only occasionally as they are becoming rare in the wild. Sold in packs of five, when available.

According to Devon Wildlife Trust freshwater mussels are struggling for survival due to river pollution from fertilisers used in farming as well as dwindling fish stocks in England.
