Six years into her reign, 24-year-old Queen Victoria commissioned this never-before-seen portrait as a surprise birthday gift for her beloved husband, Prince Albert. Painted in 1843 by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, it was Albert’s favorite portrait of her. He kept it in a private room at Windsor Castle, and didn't let anyone else view it.
