Dunrobin Castle, Sutherland, Scotland, has been home to the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland since the 13th century. In 1844 Sir Charles Barry drew up designs for the second Duke of Sutherland to enlarge and alter the original modest castle. Barry visited the site in 1848 when he designed the great tower and laid out the terraced garden. The very large extravagantly silhouetted building occupies a splendid position above Dornoch Firth.
