Veracruz Stone Hacha of an Avian Late Classic, ca. A.D. 550-950 (mexico) Parrots, and birds of prey - vultures, Harpy eagle, and the horned owl, were popularly depicted in hachas from Veracruz and the Southern Highland region. Avians were of quintessential importance in Pre-Columbian mythology, and their feathers were used extensively as trade items for pomp and ceremony.
