a woman wearing goggles is featured on a sign for women's history month
When I became a pilot, Bessie Coleman was my daily source of inspiration and encouragment...I was one of the few females on the airfield back in the day, and received plenty of nonsense and discouragement ~ but I knew I could do it BECAUSE OF HER! It was because of her that I kept plugging along...taking a bow to the fierce, brave and incomparable Bessie Coleman, the FIRST African American FEMALE aviator. Your life changed mine! Happy birthday Bessie!

Bessie Coleman
DEATH of Bessie Coleman PART 1 On April 30, 1926, Coleman, Known as Queen Bess, was in Jacksonville, Florida. She had recently purchased a Curtiss JN-4 (Jenny) in Dallas. Her mechanic and publicity agent, William Wills, flew the plane from Dallas in preparation for an airshow but had to make three forced landings along the way due to the plane's being poorly maintained and worn out. Learning this, Coleman's friends and family did not consider the aircraft safe and implored her not to fly it.
