an advertisement for art brut featuring a woman's face in blue and green
Are you familiar with "Art Brut" or outsider art ? What in my eyes makes art brut and outsider art so interesting is its diversity. It is not limited by any one art form or style and can be compared to a huge aquarium in which an almost unmanageable variety of different creatures live side by side and form a very special and unique community. It has countless different faces. This website now shows works by 144 artists. It was launched 12 years ago with the aim of drawing attention to the work of those many creative amateurs, who often receive far too little attention, who have taught themselves to draw and paint without the appropriate training, but out of inner drive or compulsion. Originally, the term "Art Brut" was mainly applied to works by patients who began working in psychiatric

Willie Jinks
Willie Jinks was born on 11 November 1921 as one of 13 children of a farmer in Locust Grove, Georgia, and died there in early April 2012. In early age he was fascinated by animals, nature and mechanical things. Willie spent most of his life in Atlanta where he worked as a garbage collector for the removal, from which he began to find items that he began to paint after his retirement as an outsider. He painted doors, sheet metal, wood, paper, shoes, luggage, everything he had. He is famous for his "Hoperman figures" (Hobbyman), which appear in many of his works: probably himself, because he took the phone and answered as Hoperman. A special feature of his works are the inscriptions, sometimes to be deciphered, but occasionally used only as design elements. Pictures of Willie Jinks, the phot

Pierre Albasser
I am a big fan, a collector and an admirer of Pierre Albasser, one of the only remaining and most interesting artists still selling artworks on eBay at the moment. He was an engineer and has choosen an early retirement to started a completely new career as an outsider artist years ago. He is in his eighties now and he still creates a fabulous joyful and colorful world. He started recycling when nobody spoke about it. Instead of using standard sized papers and boards, he chooses the reverse side of packages of our daily requirements for his works and gets inspired by the variety of shapes. Even for the colors, he makes use of spare ink of printers. He has his own way to re-use old ballpoint tubes for his drawings as well. On this website, you will find many works by this extremely intere

Steve Moseley
When I found and bought the drawing by John Henry Toney presented as a part of the previous post, the US Artist Steve Moseley who is himself a collector of outsider art did come accross this website. He asked me for a photo mentioning that he wanted to create and dedicate me one of his fabulous wimsical bottles. Some weeks later, I received this beautiful bottle full of humor that shows me as a collector and a prisoner of his collecting passion holding this new arrival in my hand, looking at the ceiling for some empty space for the new acquisition. A marvelous work which is certainly the most fabulous and greatest gift I have ever received...

Babahoum and John Henry Toney
On top a drawing by Moroccan outsider artist Babahoum who started to draw late in his life. The elements of this amusing drawing that reminds me think of arabic writing. At the bottom a drawing of an afroamerican farmer, John Henry Toney, who, as well, started late in his life to draw when he found a turnip with a very special shape that he wanted to draw and he found so much pleasure in this activity that he drew for the rest of his life and became a famous outsider artist.

Noviadi Angkasapura
The indonesian Artist, Noviadi Angkasapura, used to sell his drawings on his Facebook account and the drawings of this site where bought from him, but some years ago, he stopped to sell his works himself and two important galleries started to sell and promote him: Cavin Morris and Henry Boxer Gallery in New York and in London made him became a well known outsider artist. The drawings bought before show an extremely gifted artist still experimenting. In the meantime, his artworks are beautifully balanced, much larger than the works persented on the website and their style is much more settled and less divers. Last year, the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne selected and bought 15 drawings out of all artworks by Noviadi Angkasapura presented on this website.
