Every year going back multiple generations, the Japanese side of my family has gotten together to celebrate New Year’s Day with a big potluck, and spam musubi is an absolute staple. It’s really become a comfort food for me and brings back a lot of amazing memories with family and friends. So, I wanted to try my own take on Spam Musubi Katsu using @trybachans’ amazing Hot & Spicy Japanese BBQ Sauce and my air fryer, and it turned out SO good! 🤩 You can also use their Original for a non-spicy version. 👉 The full recipe is below, and be sure to let me know what you think in the comments if you give it a try! 🙌 INGREDIENTS (2 pieces) 2 slices of Spam 3 oz cooked white rice 3 tbsp furikake 3 tbsp Bachan’s Hot & Spicy Japanese BBQ Sauce shichimi togarashi to taste 2 cups panko 2 eggs 2 tbsp all-purpose flour 2 tbsp neutral oil (I like avocado oil) INSTRUCTIONS: 1️⃣ Preheat air fryer to 350 degrees. 2️⃣ Cook rice and then transfer into a medium mixing bowl. Add furikake and mix it in. 3️⃣ Slice Spam and put in a pan over medium heat. Cook both sides until they start darkening a bit, and then pour in Bachan’s sauce. Be sure to coat both sides of Spam for a nice glaze. 4️⃣ Place half the rice into a Spam musubi mold and press down to form the rice base. Then, season the top of the rice with shichimi togarashi, and place a piece of Spam on top. 6️⃣ For the nori, I buy ones specifically made for onigiri (2.75 inches wide) since they’re the perfect size, but if you only have the larger sheets, you can cut it into thirds. Center it above the musubi, place it down, and wrap it around the sides and bottom. 7️⃣ Put the flour, two eggs, and panko into their own respective dishes. Whisk the eggs well. Coat the musubi in flour, then egg, then panko. For a thicker, crispier breaded layer like in the video, coat a second time in egg and panko. 8️⃣ Spray the air fryer cooking surface AND the tops of your katsu with nonstick cooking spray, and cook for 10 minutes. Then flip them over, spray the side facing up, and put back in for 5-6 minutes. 9️⃣ Plate them, drizzle a little more Bachan’s sauce on top, and enjoy! | Nomtastic Foods | Foodie Guide | brunomars · Bruninho’s Theme Song
